Matsuri of late summer, Japanese local festival

Sometimes when I’m in Japan, I have the chance to be present at various Japanese festivals “Matsuri”, that take place over several days.

In Japan, traditional festival “Matsuri” takes a big part of each area. Even in this modern and developed society, people still care the old customs and gods live in their local area. Not only for enshrining their own gods but also for reconnecting distant neighbors.

Notable matsuri often feature processions which may include elaborate floats. Preparation for these processions is usually organised at the level of neighborhoods.  Prior to these, the local kami may be ritually installed in mikoshi and paraded through the streets.

This is a very interesting experience. Lots of dancing, drums, and vendors selling all different types of food.

Many festivals feature decorated floats (dashi), which are pulled through the town, accompanied by drum and flute music by the people sitting on the floats. Every festival has its own characteristics.
